This revealing documentary traces his development from angry young man to pride of Rome. His prodigious talent has led people to describe him as being more divine than human. Modern experts demonstrate the techniques used in painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, even working on scaffolding based on Michelangelo's design. A sculptor uses traditional tools to carve David's nose out of marble taken from the same mountains as used for the original statue of David. But will these experts' skill and dedication be sufficient for the completion of these arduous tasks, or are they missing one essential asset: pure genius?

His personal life is also examined. Inspired by his letters and poems, this film reconstructs key periods of his life to provide a fascinating insight into the obsessions and inspirations of this complex character. Was art's first superstar the poverty-stricken, tortured, lonely outsider that many of us believe? Or was he a cunning spin-doctor who skillfully moulded his own image?
